In this Italy online travel guide you will find informations, pictures and videos of all 20 regions of italy and the capitals of each region. Each region is divided into provinces of which there are a total of 108 provinces, which in turn consist of 8101 municipalities. Here is an overview of italian destinations for your vacation in italy.

Basic information

Italy has an area of 301336 km² and approcimately 59.3 million inhabitants (2008). The Italian mainland can be almost regarded as a peninsula, because almost all 20 italian regions are surrounded by the Mediterranean sea. Italy has overall a 7600 km long coastline, which makes it the country with the longest coastline in europe. The Italian currency until 2002 was the italian lira, later replaced by the Euro. The capital of the country is Rome with about 2,7 million inhabitants. Among the largest cities in Italy belongs Milan (Milano), Naples (Napoli), Turin (Torino), Palermo, Genoa (Genova), Bologna, Florence (Firenze), Catania, Bari and Venice.

Religion

The Italian Residents belong with 85% to the Roman Catholic Church and are for the most part very devout. Every Village in Italy has his own patron saint which will celebrated on a given day every year. Among the most famous and popular religious festivals are San Giovanni, Santa Maria and San Giuseppe. In particularly Sicily celevrates the festival of Santa Rosalia in Palermo and Sant'Agata in Catania, Sant'Alfio in Trecastagni and Sant'Efisio in Sardinia

Geography

Geographically you'll find in italy everything your heart disires, from montain landscapes through dreamlike valleys, shores and volcanoes. Surrounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic coast the Italian peninsula is in the center of the Mediterranean. On the left side you'll receive for each italian region, the 108 provinces, the 8101 municipalities and island group a map and more informations, videos and pictures about cities and sights.

The Lifespan

The Lifespan of Italians is the second highest after Japan. In Europe Italy stand at the head what lifespan is concerned. Many have the oppinion that it depends from the climate and the Mediterranean kitchen. The life expectancy for men is 78 years and for woman around 83 years and approcimately 19% of all Italians are older than 65 years.
