What is a farm or farmhouse? Some of our visitors have already asked what is meant with the word Agritourism or Agriturismo.

It is a kind of vacation on a farm, very often associated with ecotourism and bio-tourism. That isn't really like holiday on a farm, but rather vacation and holiday in a rural environment. Sometimes with animals, but always in nature and countryside.

Masseria or Fattoria

Many Italian farmhouses or Agritourism houses are located in ancient buildings which are called Fattoria or Masseria. That are farms or country houses of the 18th and 19th century, actively engaged in farming activities. An important aspect of a farmhouse or Agritourism house is the nature and countryside, the word Agritourism stands for agricultural and combined with the word tourism was created the word agritourism or in italian agriturismo.

Development of ecotourism

Over the past 10 years has developed an eco-tourism movement in Italy which began with buying of old farms and privatized tourism rural objects and the restoration of those facilities. In accordance with the motto "Holidays on the farm". Agritourism has become a very popular way to spend the vacation or holiday. In Italy there are in almost every province farm houses or agritourism houses or even agritourism providers.

The advantages of a Farmhouse or country house are obvious, spending the vacation or holiday in Italy without crowd, bit in a smaller circle, often even cheaper than a hotel. There is a certain closeness to the owner or manager of the farm and usually the landlord knows a lot about the surroundings and can convey knowledge about attractions and sights which can't get cerntainly at the hotel reception. Many ecotourism or bio tourism provider cook with fresh ingredients in their own country-style and grow the vegetables or fruits in your own garden.

You can also enjoy fresh and first class local products who brings you slightly closer the country, region or province of italy.

Who like to spend their vacation or holiday in a rural setting or environment should try and spend some days on one of these holiday farms, holiday farm or country houses in italy. There are also Agritourism houses near the beach, in the montains and also actually in every imaginable landscape.
