Basic information
The region Friuli-Venezia Giulia is located
in the northeastern part of Italy, bordering
Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Veneto. The region has
a surface area of 7845 km² and approximately
1.2 million inhabitants. Friuli-Venezia Giulia
is divided into 4 provinces, the capital city
Trieste, Pordenone, Gorizia and Udine.
As well as the region Valle d'Aosta also
Friuli-Venezia Giulia has a special status,
because of the languages which were spoken
in a large part of the territory, the
so called Furlan or Friuli, a Romance language
of the sub-group of the retro-romance
language which is recognized by authorities and
schools.

Geographicaly the region of Friuli-Venezia
Gulia offers beautiful mountain and hill
landscapes which in the southern part
consist of a rocky coastline and
approached last the Adriatic coast.
In the northern part are the so-called
Julian Alps which got there name by
Gaius Julius Caesar. In the Marano Lagoon
(Laguna di Marano) between Lignano and Grado
is a sandy beach which is best suited to
spend the beach holiday.

UNESCO World Heritage Site
In the town of Aquileia in the province
of Udine is an important Roman archeological
site which is protected by the UNESCO World
Heritage of Humanity since 1998 as well
as the basilica.

The lagoons
In the lagoons of Marano and Grado, you can
visit several small islands located between
mainland, sandbanks and the open sea.
Great architecture can be admired in Trieste
were may different cultures of the past have
left their marks. One of the main attractions
and sightseeing is the Castle of Miramare or
Castello di Miramare.
