San Pietro

San Pietro is located in front of the southwestern coast of the Province of Carbonia Iglesias which belongs to the region of Sardinia (Sardegna). The island covers an area of 51 square kilometers, making it the sixth largest island in Italy. At San Pietro are about 6600 residents mainly live in the municipality Carloforte.

West coast at San Pietro

Together with the neighboring island of Isola di Sant'Antioco and a lot of smaller islets they form the so-called Sulcis archipelago. On this archipelago are also included smaller uninhabited islands such as the Isola del Como, Vinagra, Stea and Isolotto di Capo Rosso, who are located in the west and northwest of San Pietro. The inhabited island Piana and the uninhabited Isola dei Ratti are located at the northeast of San Pietro. Isola la Vacca, however, is located at south of Sant'Antioco.

At Isola Piana was once the most famous Tonnara which served the tuna fish in Sardinia (Sardegna), today on the island Piana are tourist facilities for tourists. Like most of the mediterranean islands in Italy also this one has beautiful beaches with turquoise and crystal clear water, but not a nice as that of La Maddalena and the so-called Costa Smeralda. The west coast is very rocky and consists of volcanic rock, on the east coast the coast is somewhat gentler and there are coast stretches with sandy beaches such as 2 km south from the port Carloforte. In the southern part of the island on the western side is a beautiful small lagoon which can be reached also by car.

There are various accommodation options from hotel, cottage, country houses, apartments, camping to B&B so that there must be the optimal choice for everyone. Offers such as sport fishing are also offered there.

The Island San Pietro can be reached by ferry from Sant'Antocio or from the port at Calasetta, or from the port by Portvesme in Sardinia (Sardegna) The two ferry companies Saremar and S.A.S Delcomar navigate to the port auf Carloforte by ferry. The crossing from Carloforte takes about 30 minutes and from the Portovesme it takes about 40 minutues.
