Sant'Antioco

The island Sant'Antioco is located in front of the southwestern coast of the Province of Carbonia Iglesias and belongs to region of Sardinia (Sardegna). The island covers an area of 108 square kilometers, making it the fourth largest island in italy before Pantelleria and after Elba. Sant'Antioco is connected by a bridge with the municipality of San Giovanni Suergiu in Sardinia (Sardegna) and is home of 11700 resdidents in the municipality of Sant'Anticio and 2500 residents in the municipality of Calasetta.

Together with the neighboring island of Isola di San Pietro this island group forms the so-called Sulcis archipelago. To this archipelago belong also some smaller uninhabited islands such as the Isola la Vacca in the south of Sant'Antioco, Isola del Como, Vinagra, Stea and Isolotto di Capo Rosso lacated in the west and northwest of San Pietro. The inhabited island Piana and the uninhabited island Isola dei Ratti are located in the northeast of San Pietro.

History

Sant'Antioco is inhabited since prehistoric times and the village Solki was founded by the Phoenicians around 900 BC. and around 600 BC. conquered by the Carthaginians. The name Sulcis received the town during the Punic wars by the Romans. Today there is not much left of this village, because of the further advanced expansion of the citiy Sant'Antioco.

Like most mediterranean islands in italy also Sant'Antioco has beautiful beaches with turquoise and crystal water. Among the most beautiful beaches are Spiaggia Madroxia, Co'e Quaddus, Turri Caletta, Portixeddu and Calalunga Veduta. All that coast stretches are composed of sandy beaches which are in now and then separated by rocks.

There are various accommodation options on Sant'Antioco from hotels, cottages, country houses, holiday farms, apartments, camping and Bed and Breakfast (B&B) so that there have to be something for everyone. Offers such as sport fishing are also offered there.
