Basic information
Before i tell you each detail about the cities,
i want tell you somd general information about
the island of sun. Sicily has a surface
area of around 26500 km² and has about 5 million
inhabitants.
The island is divided into 9 main provinces,
each oft them owns the name of the largest city.
This 9 main provinces are divided into 390
municipalities.
The capital Palermo has approximately 750000 inhabitants
and is located in the northwest of the island.
The second largest city is Catania which approximately 420000
inhabitants, Catania lies on the east coast of Sicily
(Sicilia) at the foot of the volcano Mount Etna.
Of great importance is also the city Messina from which
can be taken ferries to Italy. Messina has approximately
270000 inhabitants and is located at the northeastern top
the Mediterranean island. The provinces Enna and
Caltanissetta are located in the center of the
island, Ragusa is at the southeast coast and Trapani
is located at the west coast of Sicily (Sicilia).
Of great historic significance are the
cities Syracuse (Siracusa) and Agrigento,
Segesta, Selinunte, Taormina and Giardini Naxos,
there you can find some Greco Roman temples,
ruins and theater.
The history of these cities is characterized
by many peoples since today.
The cultures of past eras are united on the
Mediterranean island Sicily (Sicilia) and turned
this island to something very special on which
you can get many beautiful impressions.
Bot for nothing this island of sun is called the
Land of the thousand faces.
Interesting cities are also Monreale, especially
for its cathedral, then the baroque stronghold
Noto and city of sicilian majolica and ceramic
Caltagirone.
Around Sicily (Sicilia) you can also find
a large number of diffrent island groups like
the so-called Aeolian islands to which belongs
Lipari, Stromboli, Vulcano, Panarea, Salina,
Alicudi and Filicudi.
Then the egadi islands where can be find
Favignana, Marettimo and Levanzo.
The so-called Isole dello Stagnone to which
the island Mozio belongs and the Salinas.
The Pelagian islands with Lampedusa, Linosa
and Lampione.
Then the scattered islands like Pantelleria
and Ustica.
